On page 1 we highlight the frustration Governors Bay residents are having with speeding traffic on Dyers Pass Rd. An out of control car came close to hitting a house on Friday night. Residents are angry at what they say is a lack of action from their local community board. In another battle, Akaroa woman Sue Stewart (page 3) may have won her fight over dangerous footpaths. She was injured when she tripped over uneven tiles. The city council says they will be repaired within the month. Feisty Sue says she will believe it when she sees it. Uneven footpaths to be fixed
In Brief INTERSECTION OPTIONS A report on the St Andrews Hill Rd intersection will be presented to the Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board next month. The report contains the options presented to the community about potential changes to the intersection. The community board will analyse the options and make a recommendation to the city council about what should be done at the intersection. The city council received more than 650 submissions on the options.

By Caitlin Miles AFTER AKAROA pensioner Sue Stewart tripped over uneven tiles and fell grazing her face on the footpath, she took it upon herself to spray paint the hazardous concrete and loose tiles. Ms Stewart, 67, fell when she was walking along the Akaroa waterfront and decided to point out the uneven surfaces to other people. She spray-painted the footpath in broad daylight and hoped the police would see her and try and stop her from carrying out “graffiti”. However, no police were present. She marked the area to help prevent other people from falling and injuring themselves. “Locals have been complaining about the state of the tiles around the waterfront for ages,” Ms Stewart said. The city council recently carried out public consultation on safety improvements at footpath intersections. The focus of the consultation was on installing tactile pavings – textured, yellow surfaces that aid pedestrians who are visually impaired. It also included kerb improvements and some road

painting to make it clear where the footpath ended and the road began. Ms Stewart said it was frustrating that improving the uneven concrete didn’t make it into the consultation. “It’s really bloody annoying. This is my village, I was born here. It breaks my heart to see my town falling into the sea,” she said. City council staff went to look at the uneven surfaces and investigate what could be done about the problem. LAND SWAP FEEDBACK The city council has started consultation on the proposed land swap, which involves moving Redcliffs School to Redcliffs Park. The plan is to exchange ownership of Redcliffs Park for the school site. The swap has been proposed by the Ministry of Education, which wants to exchange the school site it owns in Main Rd for the city council-owned Redcliffs Park on Beachville Rd. Under the proposal, there would be a new park on the current school site and the school would be built on the current Redcliffs Park. Submissions to city council close on June 26. •Ruth Dyson’s column, page 13 CENTRE RECEIVES GRANT The Heathcote Valley Community Association has received $5786 for the Heathcote Valley Community Centre. The Linwood-CentralHeathcote Community Board has approved the funding from its discretionary response fund to go towards the set up costs of the centre. The old centre and library had to be demolished due to earthquake damage. The association has been setting up the building and making it into a community space.

City council planning and delivery transport manager Lynette Ellis said contractors had coned off the two sites on Beach Rd that Ms Stewart spray-painted and repair work would be carried out. However, Ms Stewart doubted it would happen. “I can’t see it happening within the month, I can see it happening eventually . . . it’ll get done when the cruise ships come and an American falls,” Ms Stewart said. The city council received two complaints last month on the state of the tiles. Banks Peninsula city councillor and Deputy Mayor Andrew Turner went to the site to see the damage and he said he wanted Ms Stewart to know the city council was taking the matter “very seriously.” •Letters, pages 6 & 7

On the Burning Edge documents the Port Hills fire from the Governors Bay and Banks Peninsula side. Educator’s zest for Jacqueline Yoder lives in Corsair Bay so she and her family can be by the sea. She started working at Linwood College to make a difference in the community and help turn the school around. She spoke to Bridget Rutherford about teaching Te Reo and what she wants to achieve at the school So can you tell me what your role at Linwood College is? I’m the head of learning area, English. I’m also leader of gifted and talented, and enrichment programmes. One of the new moves in education is communities of learning. Rather than schools being separated entities, schools create connections between them. Linwood College has two communities of learning. We’ve got the bays cluster of schools, and the tamai cluster, which are the schools near us such as Te Waka Unua. One of the things I’ve been doing is setting up a programme whereby year 6 to 8 students from both partner primary schools and our year 7 and 8 pupils come to Linwood for extension classes. We’ve just done debating and we will do maths, science and culture and others. Teachers from Linwood College with particular expertise can work with primary schools to build everybody’s capacities. It’s a new programme and it’s exciting to be part of.

When did you start working at Linwood College? I started at the beginning of this year. I came after spending 10 years at St Andrew’s College. It’s been fantastic so far, it’s such a great school and we have wonderful learners here. I loved St Andrew’s as well. Linwood has such a diverse environment and I want to help people see what a diverse and vibrant school it is. Why the move? I had shadowed Richard Edmundson (Linwood College principal) as part of my masters in leadership when he was principal at Hornby High and then I went to Linwood for placement. I had such a great time at St Andrew’s but I wanted to go somewhere where I could make a big difference in the local community I live in, because I’m from Corsair Bay. I just feel Linwood is on the cusp of incredible things. I feel really privileged to be part of the journey. I’ve also had a lot of involvement in digital learning, so I wanted to be involved in that.
Are there many differences between the schools? I think what I’ve learned is there are more similarities in our learners than differences. They’re just as passionate about their learning here. But cultural diversity is the main difference. For me, I really focus hard on building self-belief in students. The learners here have incredible problem solving skills. It’s about building that self-belief and putting in structures here so they can express those views. To put it bluntly, St Andrew’s is one of the city’s most prestigious private schools, and Linwood has had its share of issues over the last few years. Did you see the move being challenging? I’ve been here on placement before so I knew the college. I think I was ready for a bigger challenge. When I came here, Richard had such an influence here and so did acting principal Linda Tame before him. So once I got here, there was a real readiness for change.

the sea and inspiring students I’ve been really supported, I’ve been able to develop enrichment programmes and every new initiative that we’ve looked at putting in has been so well supported. And since I have been here, there have been no behavioural issues and all the students are excited. I think they sense there is a real movement. And you’re having quite an integral role in the school’s redevelopment aren’t you? Getting to watch Richard as a leader, it’s like masterclass every day. Being part of the redevelopment, because I was a dean at St Andrew’s, being able to build on those skills I’m in a prime position to help here. I’m a pretty driven person, I like to be in places where there’s challenge and opportunity. The thing about Linwood is I thought there would be more challenges, but there’s actually been so much opportunity. Linwood is a place where there’s a recognition our cultural diversity defines our identity and it’s hugely important. A learner comes here and can feel safe in their culture. That’s a special thing to have in our school and it’s exciting because I’m learning too.

What do you hope to see happen in Linwood’s redevelopment? I hope to see that Linwood College becomes the school of choice for our community. That we continue to build on the strengths we’re clearly developing now. That we’re a place where our innovation and cultural responsiveness is an example and a shining light in secondary schooling in New Zealand. We want Linwood to be the benchmark. And I think it can be, I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think that.
Where were you before St Andrew’s? I spent a period at St Bede’s and before that almost 10 years in London working as an investment banker. It was good to have that long overseas experience and then I was ready to come home. While I was there and outside the classroom I ended up deciding that education was for me. I’ve just completed my masters in secondary school leadership. I’ve always wanted to live by the sea and we live in Corsair Bay. I have three children, aged 14, 11 and eight.
So I guess when you’re not working you’re a bit of a taxi service. I’ve got a lovely husband who does a lot of that (laughs). I’m pretty intensively focused here at the moment. I love doing a lot of running, I’ve done a couple of half marathons, but for now, I like to call it maintenance running. You are a Te Reo speaker and teacher. What drew you to that? I have taught Te Reo in all my roles up until now. I was head of the Te Reo programme at St Andrew’s, which I set up and
ran. I also taught it at St Bede’s. I think that’s another reason why I came to Linwood, even though I’m not teaching it, there are lots of opportunities to speak with my students. I did Te Reo at university. I would say I’m competent in it. Why did you get into teaching initially? My father was a school principal. It’s in the genes, I think I was biologically predisposed. I was always around teachers, even when I left to get into banking, I think my heart was always in teaching.

ROADING CHANGES Parking restrictions, footpath improvements and landscaping on Nayland St will go ahead as part of the Sumner Village Master Plan. The work will be done outside Matuku Takotako, Sumner Centre and across the road outside 31-33 Nayland St. The Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board approved the parking restrictions to improve visibility for people getting in and out of the community centre car park. The community centre is currently being built and is expected to open in August. ROAD CLOSURE Selwyn Rd, Lyttelton, has been closed to allow large trucks to access a property. The closed section is between Ross Tce and Selwyn Pde. Detours are in place and the road will be closed until the end of the month. CORRECTION In last week’s Bay Harbour News, it was reported that the Heathcote Valley Community Association received $5786 from the Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board to go towards the set-up costs of the community centre. This is incorrect. The community board is waiting for further information on what the grant would go towards before it decides whether to approve it or not. Bay Harbour News apologises for the error.

Health hub design released THE FINAL design of the Akaroa Health Hub has been released. The city council’s Akaroa Design and Appearance Advisory Committee will discuss the design today. The health hub will be built on the corner of Onuku and Aylmers Valley Rds. It will be built on the same site as the previous Akaroa Hospital. The community has been without a hospital since it was demolished following the September 4, 2010, earthquake. The eastern side of the building will accommodate a doctor’s general practice with a treatment room and procedure rooms, while the western side will have an eight bedroom aged-care facility. In the centre of the site will be a courtyard which can be accessed from multiple parts of the hospital. Aylmers Valley Rd will remain the main access point for pedestrians, vehicles and ambulances – which is the same as it was in the previous Akaroa Hospital. It is expected to cost $4.5 million. The health hub is a partnership between the Akaroa community and the Canterbury District Health Board.

School land swap hearings panel formed
By Caitlin Miles THREE councillors and two community board members are on the hearings panel charged with making recommendations on the future site of Redcliffs School. Heathcote councillor Sara Templeton (left) and fellow Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board members, Dr D arrell Latham and Dr T im Lindley will all be involved in making recommendations to the city council on the Redcliffs School and Redcliffs Park land swap. The community board expressed an interest in having representatives involved in the hearings panel. Last week the board decided Dr Latham and

Dr Lindley should be included. They will be joined by councillor Glenn Livingstone while Deputy Mayor Andrew Turner will be chairman of the panel. The city council opened consultation on the proposed land swap on May 29 which involves exchanging ownership of the park to the school site. The swap has been proposed by the Ministry of Education, which wants to exchange the school site it owns in Main Rd for the
pushing for the project to encourage more art in the community. Following the Street Scape art display in the city, Ms Swinard felt it would be a “cool idea” to have someone paint the white wall of the pool. “I’m surprised taggers haven’t got it already,” she said. Ms Swinard has started looking at other funding options. She plans to look into numerous grants and see who would be willing to offer services like scaffolding and paint for free or at a discounted price. She has reached out to an artist and is now waiting for designs and costings from the artist.

Bid to enhance pool wall By Cathkin Miles A LACK of funding has not deterred a Lyttelton resident from getting a mural on a wall outside the Norman Kirk Memorial Pool. Greer Swinard asked the Banks Peninsula Community Board to look into funding a mural on the Oxford St wall of the pool. The city council’s recreation and sports unit maintains the pool and makes decisions on its future. City council staff said while they liked the idea of a mural, at the moment there was no money available to fund it. In spite of a lack of funding, Ms Swinard said she has decided to continue

News Facelift starts on fire station AFTER 35 years the Akaroa volunteer fire station is being upgraded. The station was built in 1982 and is now getting a muchneeded facelift. Last week the brigade put the call out to the community for cardboard boxes to help pack up the station. The call was answered and the brigade is most thankful. As the firefighters packed up they reminisced about the old station and its memories, while discussing plans for the upgrade. The brigade is working out of Portacoms while the new station is being built on the Beach Rd site. It will be the second time it has been rebuilt. Work is already under way, builders moved in last week to start work on the interior, to strengthen it to earthquake standards and meet health and safety regulations. Work is expected to take just over three months. The station has 20 volunteers and houses three appliances to service Akaroa and the wider area.
Couple’s married life on show By Caitlin Miles THE LYTTELTON Arts Factory will hold its opening show of the season tomorrow night. Let’s Not Argue will be art imitating a certain amount of life – husband and wife David Ladderman and Lizzie Tollemache will put their real life relationship on display when they play husband and wife in the show. The original play depicts the best, the worst and the funniest parts of the everyday interactions between husband and wife, including the ever-changing gender roles and dynamics. The 60min show includes 100 moments, four fights, three makeups and 24 cups of tea. Tollemache said out of all of the shows the couple has done, and roles they’ve played, this was the scariest. “We have juggled chainsaws and been in life-threatening situations purely for other people’s entertainment, but this is the most terrifying thing we have ever done; performing as a married couple, with my own husband, is just so real,” Tollemache said. It’s not the first time the couple has acted together, they played together in Dunstan Creek Séance and Mr & Mrs Alexander. Let’s Not Argue is directed by
Mike Friend, founder of the Lyttelton Arts Factory (formerly Loons Theatre), and choreographed by Neil Fisher, who is internationally renowned for his work. “It is even better that they have such great chemistry on stage since they are a real couple,” Friend said. Ladderman and Tollemache have been together for six years and married for nearly two – the show just misses their two-year wedding anniversary. Friend said every couple will be able to relate to this performance. “The show is universal; it aims to portray the untold story of every relationship. Anyone will be able to see parts of their relationship on display and that’s what makes this play so great,” Friend said. Lyttelton Arts Factory was formerly known as the Loons Theatre Trust, which was formed in 2007 and regularly performed at The Loons on Canterbury St, Lyttelton. • Let’s Not Argue will be taking to the stage from June 8-24 at Lyttelton Primary School, the new home for the Lyttelton Arts Factory. News Barnes to head Lincoln rock event By Georgia O’Connor-Harding AN AUSTRALIAN rock icon is set to step foot onto the Lincoln Domain for one of the biggest musical festivals in Selwyn next year. The Selwyn Sounds concert is back with Jimmy Barnes to headline the rock concert, along with an iconic line-up of Australasian groups. It will be held on March 3. Barnes will be joined by The Feelers, Mental as Anything, Stellar, The Mockers, The Narcs, The Lady Killers and The Warratahs. Organiser David Parlane said the line-up is sensational and he is excited to have secured a class act such as Barnes to headline the show. “We couldn’t do the same as what we did this year, we had to do something a little different and make it bigger and better . . . this year has got a little bit more of a feel for everybody,” he said. It was estimated more than 7500 packed into Lincoln Domain for the inaugural concert in March. Mr Parlane said the organisers had learnt from the last event and will be looking to have more Portaloos and designated areas to distinguish between male and female. He said entry to the concert was a learning curve and there will now be designated lines for people taking chilly bins and express lines

Sumner chase top six spot in cup By Gordon Findlater SUMNER WON their third straight game on Saturday with a 36-7 win over Belfast to continue a late charge for a top six spot in the Hawkins Cup. With one round remaining the equation is simple. Sumner are currently seventh in the competition, three points behind Burnside in sixth. They need to get the job done against Marist Albion on Saturday and hope Belfast do them a favour against Burnside. Sumner couldn’t pick a better occasion to push for the top six, with Saturday being their annual club day. After Saturday, the 12-team competition will be split into a top and bottom six for the remainder of the season. For the second week running, the sea-siders had the game wrapped up by half-time, running in five tries to lead Belfast 31-0. “We were fantastic in the first half. I think we’re going to have to ask to have the game changed to 40 minutes,” said Sumner coach Martin Dodgson. The first try of the day came through wing Zach Kiribirige who crossed in the right corner less than 10 minutes in. They grabbed their second soon after when centre Wes Mauafu ran

In just his second start this season, Marshall Suckling produced a moment of individual brilliance to jink past a number of tacklers in a 50m effort. Belfast were reduced to 14 men midway through the opening half when their captain Kurt Moore was sin-binned for taking out winger Poasa Waqanibau. Sumner made the most of the
numbers advantage, running in two more tries before the break courtesy of Waqanibau and Tu’uta Simaile. The second half was a different picture. Waqanibau grabbed his second try of the game, Sumner’s only memorable moment. “There was no intensity. There was a period of about five minutes where I think there might have been a minute of ball in play,” said Dodgson. Luckily, Dodgson has a strong
relationship with Belfast coach Damian Steele. He coached Steele during their time together at the Brothers Rugby Club in Brisbane. “We watched the Crusaders game together so I was able to give him a friendly reminder that we need them to get a result against Burnside,” said Dodgson. His side’s focus will be on Marist Albion, though. They have just one win to their name and fell to bottom-of-the-table High School Old Boys on Saturday. However, Dodgson says everyone in the team knows they still have a job to do and can’t take Marist Albion lightly. “We’re really hungry to make that top six. I would love to have another crack at the top teams this year. I think we could give some of them a serious run,” said Dodgson.

Looking at these works as a whole, I see the main preoccupation has been water, and where the land meets it. The landscape, although more modelled and distinct in terms of handling, is not the main motivation – just as important is the inescapable fact of the ocean. Making these works was more about the process than before, sticking pieces on, seeing what opportunities were created, adjusting, rearranging... it was about not having a set finish in mind, just responding to what the works needed. In this way I think of these works as more universal and about painting rather than simply “landscape paintings”.

New uniforms boost for Redcliffs netballers By Caitlin Miles REDCLIFFS SCHOOL netball team will no longer take to the court in a jumble of uniforms – they have won new gear in a national competition. Sports teacher Jenni Williams decided to make the application because on the court the players would be wearing a mix of three uniforms at any one time. Ms Williams entered the team into the ANZ Netball Dream Delivery programme which includes the girls getting new uniforms, bibs, balls and gear bags. The school has wanted to get new uniforms for sometime, but the uncertainty over the future of the where the school would be stopped them from doing so. Ms Williams said when the school was confirmed to stay the next hurdle was getting the money to afford the uniforms. So she decided to enter the school in the competition, explaining the situation in the competitions entry form. “The girls were really happy when they found out,” Mr Williams said. The year 7 and 8 team haven’t lost a game yet and Ms Williams said now that they will be in

SUMNER Running Club’s Lisa Brignull won her age category in Sunday’s Christchurch Marathon. Brignull braved cold and wet conditions to win the women’s 40-49 category. She was also the second female home overall in a time of 3hr 8min 10sec, behind winner Hannah Oldroy. Jennie Nicholson, who joined the club this year, ran the mara-
thon in 3hr 19min 43sec. She was second behind Brignull in the 40-49 category and the sixth women over the line. Other results for the club included Shaun McWhirter, who finished 20th overall in a time of 2hr 55min. In the half marathon, Simon Wooding ran 1hr 26min. Michael Laird ran in the 10km race and finished in 40min 21sec

Geoff Spearpoint has been awarded a Queen’s Service Medal for his dedication to outdoor recreation. The Birdlings Flat resident his written v arious books and maintaining hut facilities throughout Canterbury. Mr Spearpoint’s first book Waking to the Hills: Tramping in New Zealand was published in 1985. He went on to edit Moirs Guide North in and has co-authored The Canterbury Westland Alps: A Climbing and Transalpine Guide, Shelter from the Storm: The Story of New Zealand’s Backcountry Huts and A Bunk for the Night: A Guide to New Zealand’s Best Backcountry Huts. He has also written numerous articles for club journals and Wilderness magazine. He was a guide on the 2004 TVNZ series Explorers and in 2012 and 2013 he was the lead guide and an adviser to the TVNZ series First Crossings. In recent years he has made a significant contribution to maintaining and restoring Department of Conservation

Zealand Alpine Club. Last year he was awarded the New Zealand Alpine Club outstanding volunteer award. Alan John Hackett, known as AJ Hackett, of Mt Pleasant, has been awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to adventure tourism. Mr Hackett developed the modernised elastic bungy cord, founded commercial bungy
jumping and, over 30 years, turned the adventure tourism activity into a global phenomenon. Mr Hackett introduced bungy to the world when he jumped from the Eiffel Tower in 1987 and 18 months later he opened the world’s first full-time commercial bungy site at the Kawarau Bridge, near Queenstown, with Henry van Asch. This operation created a new visitor demographic and launched huge growth in New Zealand adventure tourism. He pioneered stringent national safety standards for the activity, which have been used as a base for regulating the industry across the world. For the last 20 years Mr Hackett has worked to extend his brand further around the world. He earned him Guinness World Records, including jumping from the Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado and the Macau Tower in China. Mr Hackett has also personally supported snow sport athletes and young entrepreneurs throughout the country and he supports not-for-profit and charitable organisations. Lee Robinson is a director of the Akaroa Health Hub and also received an MNZM for his 20 years of service in a voluntary
capacity within the community and for sport. He has been an instrumental member of the health hub which is rebuilding the community’s hospital and health centre following the Canterbury Earthquakes. Mr Robinson is also the Director of Richmond Services Ltd, a charity that provides community mental health and disability services. He was chairman of the St John of God Hospital Board for 10 years and chairman of the Hastings St John of God Hospital Board for five years. He has been a trustee of the Christchurch Child Cancer Foundation and the South Island Bone Marrow Trust. In 1998 he established the Rainbow Children’s Trust in Christchurch which has raised significant funds for additional facilities and amenities in the Christchurch Hospital children’s wards. His passion for cricket has also never been a secret, following the February 22, 2011, earthquake he was actively involved in reestablishing international cricket fixtures in the city. He has served as the chairman of the Canterbury Cricket Trust and he led the fundraising and building of the Hagley Oval Pavilion in 2013 and 2014.

I had asked Mr Kodama if a new Mazda RX was likely given the concept drawings of a new sports car have been on show. However, the point I’m making is that the mechanism which transforms this popular sports car is another example of Mazda’s engineering prowess. The 13sec electric operation is just sheer genius, it can also be open and closed at speeds of up to 10km/h and, for interest’s sake, boot space remains the same for all models. The concept for which we like MX-5 hasn’t been compromised, it is still the cheeky,
two-seater which thrills with its chassis balance and associated handling prowess. Whereas the soft-top is available in both 1.5-litre and 2-litre variants, the hard-top RF (retractable fastback) is a 2-litre car only, but there’s also a choice of specification and gearbox. I’ve often been a bit critical of the MX-5 and the sound that is generated within the cockpit, history has it that it has always been a bit noisy. I guess performance car buyers like that and they may be disappointed in the hardtop as it is far quieter and far more to my liking; there is an angry engine sound when it’s working hard, but under normal conditions the hardtop promotes a quiet in-cabin environment and I relate to that. Not only is the engine a delight in terms of flexibility and honesty, the MX-5’s greatest virtue is that of its feel-good factor. The suspension and chassis engineering is a marvel. Of course, drive is sent to the rear wheels and

that promotes a pure handling sensation, add in the fully involving feel from the steering wheel and the compliance within the spring and damper rates and you have a true sports car, one which delivers the fun factor along with the ability to conquer the most challenging of corners. Take into account, too, that the tyres aren’t huge (205/45 x 17in), there isn’t a lot of load put on them, and with a height of just 1235mm there is little gravitational force
working against the convertible in a quick corner, it handles flat and controlled. There’s some flexibility built into the traction control system, you can make it a little tail-happy before the electronic devices counteract oversteer, but that doesn’t interrupt the fun. The MX-5 in this form has lost none of its playful character and that is why it has been such a popular car, it has been built with character in mind and it doesn’t disappoint. For someone whose old joints don’t work quite as well as they once did, I didn’t find entry and exit into the test car onerous, in fact I was finding excuses to get in the vehicle and go for a drive. There’s a raft of amazing product coming out of the Mazda factories these days, it’s no surprise then that the MX-5 in this form is so desirable. I’m so envious of those who get to own one.

Find yourself spell-bound in
By Mike Yardley MATAMATA’S lush emerald pastures and roly-poly hills are happily home to Hobbiton, the ultimate cinematic shrine for set-jetters in New Zealand. Like a third of all visitors, I have never watched or read an entire story or movie, from either trilogy. But for starry-eyed Tolkien junkies, a journey here has acquired the stature of a pilgrimage. To reach the movie set entails a short drive by bus across the Alexander family’s farmland on a private sealed road, which was built by the New Zealand Army to service the convoy of crew production vehicles and equipment. Sir Peter Jackson sweet-talked the then Prime Minister, Helen Clark, to approve the road’s construction. Alighting from the bus, the bright green grass is long and lush as we trundle down the muddy track to the first hobbit house, where ‘the Hobbiton effect” suddenly washes over me. Unlike so many movie locations, Hobbiton casts you under its spell because it’s exactly the same as it appears on screen. It’s all so sweet and tender, with washing hanging on a line near a chimney poking out of a grassy mound. Baskets are plump with pump-

kins, while flowers and herbs have been hung up to dry by a round yellow door. As we walked down a gravelled path, some members of my group frothed with delight, recognising it as the spot where Frodo Baggins greeted Gandalf at the start of The Fellowship of the Ring. And these tingly movie moments just kept on coming, as we strolled around the 44 hobbit houses that are strung around the hillsides, fizzing with excitement being photographed outside Bag End or sitting on the
see-saw beneath The Party Tree, where Bilbo held his eleventy-first birthday. I was fully submerged in the fantasy-meets-reality world of Middle Earth. It’s little wonder that 450,000 visitors toured the movie set, last year alone. Winding our way around the hills, the panoramic views reach right across the lake to the stone bridge, the watermill and the Green Dragon Inn, which looked like a life-sized thatched cottage from my grandmother’s Lilliput Lane collection.

Jackson didn’t like the colour of the leaves, so they were all re-painted by hand, even though the tree was only in shot for 10 seconds. Kate also revealed that moss and lichen was liberally deployed to give the movie-set’s fences a weathered, old look. They created fake moss and lichen by blending woodchips, yoghurt and paint together. As they were during filming, the vegetable patches are still filled with super-sized plants so as the hobbits would look smaller.

Technically, it is still an “active set,” and a team from Weta visit every six months to give it a touch up. The hanging clothes were deliberately made to hang on the line
for up to two years, before being replaced. A full-time gardening team work daily on maintaining the picturesque appearance of the trees, flowers and lawn.

Sir Peter Jackson’s art director, Brian Massey, ensured everything down to the mugs maintained complete faith with how The Green Dragon Inn was depicted onscreen. A triumph of expert craftsmanship, it’s a charmingly snug and toasty timbered environment, and the crackling open fire was an extra thrill to warm the cockles, on a chilly April day. All the brews are exclusively created by Good George Brewing, in Frankton. Maybe it was the ale, but as I re-boarded the bus to depart, I felt like I was stepping out of a movie. It really doesn’t matter whether you’re a film fanatic or not. The movie set sits on 4.8ha of land and my charming guide, Kate, shared a constant flow of fascinating bite-sized nuggets about Hobbiton. An over-riding theme is the meticulous attention to detail that Jackson demanded. All of the farm’s livestock had to be removed when shooting took place, because they didn’t look English enough. Suffolk sheep, notable for their black faces and legs, were hauled up from the South Island during shooting. Real apple and pear trees were stripped of their and replaced with plastic leaves and

Migraine relief Your headache or migraine may literally be a pain in the neck

Krissy Winter, a patient of Muscle People, had this to say about her experience: “My migraines were debilitating and they’d often come without warning. Sometimes once a week, but generally about once a month. I’d moved up from Dunedin where I’d managed them
